President Joe Biden has given his German shepherd, Commander, away after biting Secret Service agents no less than two dozen occasions at the White House and elsewhere.
Commander was banished from the presidential residence after the 11th attack that was publicly disclosed and happened in the fall, newly launched Secret Service emails reveal.
The roughly 24 incidents between October 2022 and July 2023 are a better quantity than previously recognized, and the emails element for the first time the measures that the federal company took to try to hold brokers protected from the dog.
Commander is now dwelling with Biden's other relations. He has been gifted to Biden by his brother and sister-in-law.
A source close to the Bidens stated 'they've been heartbroken' over Commander's attacks.
'They've apologized to those who have been bitten, taken flowers to some. They feel terrible,' the source informed CNN.
'Commander was over-protective, and although they tried and tried to work on it, they had to let him go reside with different members of their household.'
The dozens of assaults by Commander included an incident in June when the canine knocked down and bit a Secret Service agent so onerous that stitches have been required. Resulting from blood on the floor, tours of the East Wing of the White House have been shut down for 20 minutes, in response to the emails.
In a June 2023 e-mail, an unnamed unnamed assistant special agent overseeing the Secret Providers' Presidential Protective Division advised brokers they 'have to be artistic to make sure our personal private safety'.
'The current canine bites have challenged us to adjust our operational techniques when Commander is present – please give plenty of room,' wrote the assistant special agent.
First Woman Jill Biden's spokeswoman, Elizabeth Alexander, said that 'despite further canine coaching, leashing, working with veterinarians, and consulting with animal behaviorists, the White House surroundings simply proved an excessive amount of for Commander'.
Commander is Biden's second canine to be sent away. His German shepherd Major was also removed from the White House after a number of biting incidents.
